What is Needed for Exchanging a Driver's License?
To exchange your driver's license for a Portuguese one, follow these steps:
- Undergo a medical examination:
- Obtain a medical certificate on the electronic medical certificate platform. Any doctor at a clinic or hospital can assist you with this.
- If you want to include categories for large vehicles in your Portuguese license, you will also need to pass a psychological test.
- Fill out a special form and submit it along with the following documentation:
- Residence permit (you can exchange your license with a manifestation of interest).
- Driver's license.
- Certificate of authenticity of the driver's license, indicating the categories obtained through training and examination, in Portuguese or English (this can be a driver's card from the driving school or a certificate from the consulate).
- Translation of the driver's license, certified by the consular service of Portugal or another EU member state if its content is not in Portuguese, French, English, or Spanish (licenses in these languages do not need to be certified).
- Certificate of passing a psychological examination (if required).
- Submit the application:
- After submitting the application, you will receive an email to schedule an in-person visit to submit the original documents, pay the fee, and take a photograph.
- After completing all procedures, the Portuguese license will be mailed to the address provided in your residence permit.
